Narrative of Significant Events
Uganda was settled by the Bantu people in 1000. Because of this a part of Uganda today still speaks Bantu and belongs to the Bantu tribe. The next settlement occurred in 1840 when Arab traders came to Uganda in search of slaves and ivory. Uganda was then united as a British Protectorate in 1869. The British Colonial Office officially gained control of Uganda in 1905.
After years of living under the ruling of the British, Uganda finally gained independence in 1962 and declared themselves the Republic of Uganda. From then on they struggled with a constant shift in power and years of war and disease. Joseph Kony gained power in 1981 and created the LRA. With him began the Child War of Uganda. The same year Musevini was elected into office, and with him came to hope of peace. A year later, in 1982 the first AIDs epidemic was recorded in Uganda. Operation Iron Fist was then launched by Musevini in 2002 against the LRA. Finally, Joseph Kony was arrested in 2005 for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The results of these years of war and disease were a extreme rise in the number of orphans and child headed households. Uganda is only just starting to rebuild itself from these years of damage.
